Reinforcer Inventories
Published on 12 September 2023 by ABA Simplified
Reinforcer inventories are a must-have in every BCBAs toolkit. They are simple checklists designed to uncover the unique motivators of each child. Let’s delve into why they are indispensable tools in ABA interventions and how we can use them successfully.
Why Reinforcer Inventories Are Indispensable Tools
- Armed with the information from the inventory, we can conduct more targeted and efficient reinforcer assessments. This means less time spent on trial and error and a higher likelihood of finding what truly motivates the child.
- With input from parents, teachers, and caregivers, we gain valuable information about potential reinforcers. This collaborative approach ensures that the interventions are tailored to the learners’ unique preferences and motivators.
- Reinforcer inventories allow us to identify patterns of preferences and motivators, which enables us to trial items and activities that the learner has not been exposed to as yet, but might like.
- Involving parents, teachers, and caregivers in the process empowers them to be active participants in the behavior intervention plan or skill acquisition plan.
Using Reinforcer Inventories Successfully
- Diversity is Key: Each child has a unique set of preferences and motivators. Reinforcer inventories can help us uncover what excites our kiddos and guides us towards the most appropriate and effective reinforcers for each child. A comprehensive reinforcer inventory is one that covers a broad range of categories including but not limited to:
- Visual Reinforcers
- Auditory Reinforcers
- Tactile Reinforcers
- Social Reinforcers
- Activity Reinforcers
- Regular Updates Needed: As the child grows, their preferences will change over time. What was once a very effective reinforcer yesterday might not hold the same charm today. Regularly revisiting and updating the reinforcer inventory can help ensure that our reinforcement system remains effective over time. There are no specific rules as to when the inventory must be updated but here are some suggestions:
- At the start of the school year
- At the beginning or end of the authorization period
- When progress isn’t being made at the expected rate
- When the child, parent/caregiver indicates that their preferences are changing.
- Facilitates Collaboration: Reinforcer inventories act as a bridge for communication between behavior analysts, the child and/or their support network. After completing the reinforcement inventory, make sure to have a conversation with the child and their support network about the circumstances surrounding those preferences! Use these interviews as a means to discover what truly excites the child. You can also make use of additional questionnaires and observations to solidify your understanding of their preferences and motivators!
Reinforcer inventories are just another tool in your toolkit! By actively involving the learner, teachers, parents, and caregivers, you’re not only gaining valuable insights into the unique preferences and motivators of your learners but also building collaboration with your learners’ support network. Make sure to include a wide array of potential reinforcers to cover your bases and of course, regularly update them! And, remember to grab your comprehensive ready-to-use reinforcer inventory!
